“We would not be in the sport if it were not for the pleasure it gives us. But we also get pleasure from a good commercial outcome. Being deeply involved in the sport is a tremendous buzz for me and for my brothers but we try not to let that cloud our judgment in terms of what is right for the business.” - Sheikh Fahad bin Abdullah Al Thani
QIPCO Holding is a private, family run investment company owned by six brothers, the eldest of which, Sheikh Hamad bin Abdulla Al Thani, is Chief Executive. Based in Doha, QIPCO has a diverse range of interests, including real estate, construction, oil and gas, finance and health services. Its subsidiary companies include its racing interests Qatar Bloodstock and Qatar Racing.
QIPCO’s sponsorship portfolio includes being the title sponsor of British Champions Series and British Champions Day, as well as an official partner of Ascot Racecourse.
Sheikh Fahad, Chairman of Qatar Racing and Qatar Bloodstock, outlines QIPCO’s approach to its investment in racing.
“Ours is a business philosophy. We have always tried to operate on a commercial basis. At the end of the day, my brothers and I sit down to go through all the costs. We have to recoup money out of it – that’s why we breed to sell, both in Europe and Australia.
“The bloodstock operation is run by Qatar Bloodstock and the racing side is Qatar Racing. Both are subsidiaries of QIPCO, the holding company my brothers and I run, and on the bloodstock side, in particular, we try to apply sound commercial principals. Our first stallion Makfi had paid for his purchase fee and returned a profit before we agreed to sell him to Japan. Although we were sad to see him go, the deal made commercial sense and we will continue to trade the mares and foals where we feel it is the right thing to do from a business perspective.
“With regard to QIPCO’s sponsorship portfolio, there are several relevant and connected objectives. Firstly, we want to show our support and commitment to British racing. Our racing and bloodstock operations are based in Britain and it is in our interests to promote the quality of the sport here and ensure it is in good economic health as that brings benefits to our commercial operations.
“The international profile of the top races in Europe also provides the perfect platform for the company to reach a wider audience. QIPCO’s association with quality, world-renowned events such as Royal Ascot and British Champions Day is a very good fit for our brand.
“In addition, our racing and bloodstock operation is European based, the value of the horses we race and the stallions we stand is enhanced if they have been competing in the best races in the world.
“And finally, sponsorship of the top races provides an excellent opportunity to promote the bloodstock side of the business, in particular the stallions owned by Qatar Bloodstock."
